Noel (and Arthur) - I got close to your suggestion but ran into a problem.these instructions (below) have a link to "how to change the listening port for Remote Desktop" - I followed that, went to the Registry of each computer and changed I strongly recommend not going with a 3rd party solution until you have tried the above. I found it a convenient excuse to take my laptop to Starbucks, myself. It's a little difficult to test this whole arrangement, since there's really no way (beyond ensuring you can make local RDP connections within your LAN) to look like an outside computer except to BE outside. If you need more specifics on this I can look my settings up.Ĥ. It's been a while since I set mine up but as I recall the default settings, created when you enable Remote access, didn't include the ability for someone out on the wild Internet to make the connection.

This just makes it all that much more difficult for someone out there to guess you have an RDP port open.Ģ. Make that port anything BUT 3389, and have the router forward incoming connections on that port to 3389 on the computer to be controlled. Just to be absolutely clear about this, your router is the entity that has the outside IP address, and it will be the one with the port open whose number you choose. When you make the connection from a remote site, you'll need to use both your home's IP address and this port you choose (e.g., you'll connect using the form 11.22.33.44:567). What I would suggest is choosing a different port than 3389 to forward, and use advanced port mapping (most routers support this) to get it to your computer on 3389. If you have a router connecting your LAN to the outside world, you'll need to open a port to your machine to be controlled. Before I leave I jot down my current address, which in all cases but one so far has remained constant throughout my trip.Īssuming the original poster knows his home IP address, and knows he wants to use RDP - which is very good - here are things to think about:ġ. When I'm on trips I have my eMail program watch for a specially-formatted message from me, which elicits an autoresponse from which I can then derive the IP address. Arthur, some DHCP setups allow the user to keep the same address for long periods of time.
